Slow and steady has been Shingeki no Kyojin's approach and that's gotten irritating.
One of the big, if not biggest, difference between the manga and the anime is the pacing. Both are quite slow and that's not a bad thing per se but when you're looking at a 25 episode anime adaptation, you start get to a little bored. It doesn't feel like the staff are trying hard enough with the adaptation when it comes to the pacing, because it doesn't quite feel like they've put enough thought into translating the manga's slow but strong pace onto the small screen.
That's Shingeki no Kyojin's biggest problem at the moment. Everything else seem to be fine - directing, animation and soundtrack are a-okay - which of course is very good news, but it's becoming hard to see the good when the story isn't moving fast enough to remain as interesting as I know it can be.
Take this episode, for instance. It was an opportunity for Armin to step up and prove his worth to his best friends. It was also an opportunity for him to be a voice of clarity and intelligence in a situation where Verman has lost his cool. That's all important to his character development and the story, without a doubt. Still. It doesn't really warrant a dragged out episode just for this. It could have been streamlined, cut shorter and kept more fluid. No matter how good the animation direction was to help the dramatics, it still felt too long.
What's also worrying is another piece of Shingeki no Kyojin news. With three episodes left before a recap episode, it would be behoove the story to pick up the pace just so we can end on a high note before the one-week break from the story. That's what would be best.
