If things weren't dramatic and depressing enough, then a Mikasa backstory should fix that. On top of not staying comfortable, we can expect a lot of Shingeki no Kyojin's characters having unimaginably dark and twisted origins.
I don't think there's anything else left to say about this episode that didn't include in my full review, which isn't all that long. This was Mikasa's origins episode which gave us the knowledge of her past and how she came to be friends with Eren. Undoubtedly an important part of the story for Shingeki no Kyojin, but a little ill-timed.
We do need to know about Mikasa¡'s past, since we know about Eren's. The two are presented as a codependent couple, making Mikasa important in understanding Eren. Both of them have qualities the other lacks, and in this episode we see the beginnings of their bond. A sweet ending to a bitter and harsh story of the main heroine's past. The only things is; it would have been better if it came later on.
Mikasa's story took up most of the episode, leaving almost nothing else to be done. Aside from Armin's slow breakdown at the start of the episode, there was nothing noteworthy to happen in the episode. We're reminded that Eren might not have died, but even if he did, the episode doesn't make it clear and can contribute to future developments in the plot.
Shingeki no Kyojin has slowed things down once again. After restarting all the chaos, we got one episode of bloody action and then we got a flashback episode important to the story and neutral when it comes to the question of Eren's life.
Final Note: The episodes keep moving at a very slow pace. Almost a 1:1 ratio of chapters to episodes.
