That was good......Actually I'm not too sure myself.
This episode was a little tricky for me. When I started it, I found it difficult to get through the first half. The second half on the other hand came much easier to get through and ended up luring me into the episode. An odd combination for an episode, but not one that doesn't make this episode good.
I would best describe the first half of this Shin Sekai Yori episode as a transient dream. Much like a dream, there was no structure, leaving me more interested in the animation. If each series has one episode where the animation is fantastic, then this was Shin Sekai Yori's animation episode. Aesthetically gorgeous and somehow fitting for the tone of the episode, but it was a little distracting.
When I say distracting, I want to express that there was too much going on. The animation and art direction were without a doubt beautiful, however they took focus away from the story. Usually this wouldn't bother me, but in this situation I found it hard to concentrate on what Shun was saying. By the end of the episode, I was positive this was a turning point in the series.
As a turning point, it was interesting. I loved the emotional side to this episode and the continued mystery, which also added life to this episode. Shun's departure held a sadness yet sense of relief to it that was well-timed. Also, the way that information from episode four is still being brought up is contributing to the unravelling of the mystery rather nicely and I was fond of that also. After the first half, the second half of the episode really engaged me and kept me alert and that was enough to make the turning point stand out.
Shin Sekai Yori is one of the more interesting series this season. It has the hard task of mixing so many genres, and with episodes like these it branches out into the more artistic realm of possibility. This episode of Shin Sekai Yori was ultimately good and the series is still going strong. Nevertheless, I'd like to see more unity in the style to make it less hectic.
