The latest episode of Noragami introduces us to yet another god and her Regalia. This god, though, just happens to be Yato’s girlfriend.
That’s right, Kofuku is Yato’s girlfriend, or at least that’s what they would have us believe. Their relationship is interesting, for lack of a better term. On the surface, it looks like Yato might just be using her for money, but it’s too soon to tell for sure what their relationship is really like.
It’s clear that Yato shows up at least somewhat often, though, because Kofuku’s Regalia seems pretty familiar with him. Daikoku picks on Yato quite a lot, with good reason considering he’s likely trying to protect his goddess. At the same time, I think it’s a sort of affectionate teasing to some extent; I have a feeling Daikoku cares about Yato’s success, if only because his goddess does.
When Yato gets a call for a job, we’re taken into the longest fall I’ve ever seen. Seriously. Yato knocks the guy from the roof he was about to jump from, and during the fall to the ground the guy (Yusuke) has enough time to tell Yato, Yukine, and Hiyori his life story. By the end of the fall, Yato uses Yukine to sever Yusuke’s ties with his Kofuku, his would-be girlfriend who is actually the God of Poverty.
It turns out that Yukine is a darn good Regalia. Not only does he cut really well as we saw in the last episode, but he is also capable of easily severing a person’s ties with someone, which Daikoku explains is rather difficult to do.
And then the end of this episode gives us a lot of vague background information about Yato. He’s apparently killed a Regalia in the past, which is pretty terrifying in and of itself. That might have something to do with why he’s so kind to Yukine. He also killed quite a few people in the past to fulfill wishes, apparently, because as an obscure god he would grant any wish asked of him. I can see these little teaser discussions of his past continuing throughout the series, but I really hope we get some specific explanations of Yato’s past before Noragami ends.
