Three episodes in and I'm content with Maoyuu Maou Yuusha. I'm not overly excited, but I'm content.
My feelings towards this anime are neither here nor there. I feel as if I'm seeing it for its potential more than what it has actually delivered so far. Nothing negative about the recent episodes, but there's something almost bland about the series.
Once again the Maoyuu Maou Yuusha brings in some history to make the story more interesting. Religion, education and mercantile economics form the basis of this episode. No doubt that the series knows how to present itself, as displayed by it linking religion and education. A link that scarcely exists in this day and age, but was ultimately synonymous in Medieval times. Just with minor details like this. Maoyuu Maou Yuusha continues to keep a hold of my attention.
Where it is struggling, is giving a clear direction of the plot. Not knowing where the series is going after three episodes worries me a little, because I also see a lot going on with the plot. This isn't bad thing now, unless there is no unifying episode in the future. For now I remain positive, as we keep seeing interesting developments in the plot, like with the introduction of the merchant alliance. War profiteering merchants make for interesting antagonists, and Maoyuu Maou Yuusha has the potential to make use of this interesting side of the story.
The minor characters seem to also have a story behind them. Maid Ane has a story to be potentially re-visited later on. We're getting hints at this stage that her past will eventually catch up to her. Then we have Onna Kishi, whom we're introduced to and Onna Mahoutsukai who is briefly mentioned. Both form Yuusha's harem, although they should bring something else to the story with their respective stories.
I say this because the romance between Yuusha and Maou is progressing at an adorable pace. They haven't done anything, which is sweet and allows for some teasing from Maid Chou. It's almost surprising how well the romantic sub-plot is handled, given the lack of focus it receives.
Three episodes in and Maoyuu Maou Yuusha is good. Not exceptional (yet) but that may happen later.
