With its second episode Maoyuu Maou Yuusha has improved and gone in a direction I'm much happier with.
Dropping all the unnecessary comedy and fan service that comprised the first episode, this episode shows just how interesting the series can be. Whilst it doesn't go into depth, it start off with a taster session of what's hopefully more to come.
If you ignore the first episode to some extent, this is the episode where the groundwork is being laid. We're introduced to the intellectual side of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha through the topic of agriculture. Not only does this discussion come with much science that I can't explain all that well, there's a historical element to it that also adds to the story. I'm not going to try to explain it because someone already has done a much better job (read this review).
Not only does the episode bring up a technical discussion about agriculture, it puts our two main characters on the spot. Maou is trying to build a relationship with Yuusha, who at this time is facing a common soldiers dilemma. Just watching something like Jarhead, you'll come to understand the problem many soldiers face upon their return from the battle field. Yuusha's skills are limited, and that means he too gains nothing from the war ending. The sad truth he's bound to realise is that Maou is correct about the war being a positive thing at this point in time, even for himself.
This seems to be a major part of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha because it directly affects the romance and the main character of the series. Bringing it back to first episodes long discussion about the merits of war really impressed me with how the story can tie things together and hopefully we'll see more of this later on.
Whilst I find this episode of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha to be better than the last, there's still something missing. I'm hoping this will disappear as time goes by and hopefully it'll continue to improve. A much stronger performance for this episode.
