There just continues to be something about Kamisama Hajimemashita that makes it one of my favourites for this season.
Simplicity is often looked down upon as simply not good enough. The most memorable anime are those with flashy animation, unique stories or a specific niche that captures you in an unexpected way. Kamisama Hajimemashita doesn't do any of that, but it's simplicity is beneficial.
Episodes like this one don't get much simpler. A split between one half comedy and the other plot and character development is an easy way to appeal to two different groups of people. If you're watching this for the humour, then you won't be disappointed with the first half and if you wan't something more, the second half is there to please.
There is something to be said about how the episode was too simple. Yes the separation of comedy and actual plot driven elements of the episode did make sense on some level, but it feels like they're just throwing the back story just so the romantic development makes more sense. Romance is developing in the series and I like that Kurama is instigating it, although I don't care so much for the more serious tone.
So far the Kamisama Hajimemashita has been fun and games, and that's the main reason I've enjoyed the series. Seeing it go in a more serious direction is understandable and it can add to the romantic development between Tomoe and Nanami. In a way it is necessary so that the probable romantic conclusion to the series doesn't end up feeling forced. No surprises that Tomoe used to be the bad boy that he isn't today, a development that pushes this series' resemblance even closer to Inu x Boku SS.
With the flashback as it was, I'm left wondering if there is more in store for us in this department. Personally, I'd like to see it a little later on and enjoy more comedy right now.
