Did I just watch an episode of Kamisama Hajimemashita

I only ask this question because of the animation. Kamisama Hajimemashita doesn't exactly have the most lavish animation, but even so. This episode was almost like stating: "We spent this episode's budget somewhere else."

Lower quality animation is rarely a reason for me to be put off, however it affected the viewing experience. For the first half of the episode I was more focused on readjusting my focus on the new animation instead of paying attention to the plot. Not necessarily a loss, considering this series is all about the comedy.

That's what I thought until the second half of the episode. The first half was all very familiar humour, this time centred around Ami Nekota. Ami is one of the background characters that's popped up a few times in the past, but never really stood out. This time she delivered some laughs with her cutesy childish ways. All very enjoyable, very Kamisama Hajimemashita.

Then came the romance. Pretty serious actually, and not 100% what I was expecting. With the way the series has been, I thought the romance would come in a more joking manner. Probably not a shock to everyone - considering the more serious moments - but definitely one for me. Maybe it's because this series is shojo and that's why the romance was much more serious. Serious aside, it was a little too rushed. The relationship has been developing romantically for some time, but there haven't been many notable moments. Besides episode 5, there hasn't really been enough development.

Now that it's out there, Kamisama Hajimemashita must tread lightly. I don't the serious moments because of Tomoe but at the same time, this could have altered the comedy. Tomoe and Nanami's banter is what has made me laugh and so, the series will have to discover a new avenue for comedy.
